Richmond officials ask Amtrak to let bikes aboard

Thursday - 11/7/2013, 4:26am  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Richmond's City Council wants Amtrak to let train passengers bring their bicycles on board.

Richmond will host the USA Cycling Collegiate Nationals in May. The event is a tune-up for the UCI Road World Championships in September 2015.

Amtrak already offers a bike-on-board service on trips elsewhere. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports the City Council authorized a resolution last week to ask Amtrak to extend the service to trains coming through Richmond.

Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods says factors including funding and schedules have to be considered before bicycle options can be significantly expanded for passengers.

Currently, most Amtrak passengers first have to take apart and store their bikes in a container that can be checked as baggage, making it necessary for them to arrange additional transportation outside the train trip.
