RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- For the third straight year, the statewide recycling rate in Virginia has topped 40 percent.
The state Department of Environmental Quality says its annual report on recycling by Virginia localities shows a recycling rate of 41.5 percent in 2012. That involves the recycling of municipal and other solid waste.
The rate is down slightly from 2011, when the recycling rate was 43.5 percent. The report is based on data submitted by the state's 71 solid waste planning units, either locally or regionally.
The department says that besides the environmental benefits of recycling, it also results in lower costs for disposing of solid waste and conserves landfill space.
