RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- At least two Republican incumbents lost, but the GOP turned back most challenges by Democrats to retain a solid majority in the Virginia House of Delegates.
In unofficial returns Tuesday, Monty Mason of Williamsburg beat Del. Mike Watson and Michael Futrell of Woodbridge defeated Del. Mark Dudenhefer. No Democratic incumbents had lost, and three of the 55 contested races in the 100-member House remained in doubt.
The Democratic gains were partially offset by Republican Ben Chafin's unopposed election to fill retiring Democrat Joe Johnson's seat.
Before a series of retirements, Republicans held a 67-32 edge over Democrats, with one independent aligned with the GOP caucus. Independent Lacey Putney retired, and his seat was won by Republican Terry Austin.
