Va Civil War field hospital site opened to public

Monday - 11/4/2013, 3:10am  ET

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) -- A house in Chesterfield County that served as a field hospital during the Civil War has been opened to the public for programs and other events.

Until Saturday, the county had opened the house to visitors only by appointment.

Scott Williams with the Chesterfield Historical Society tells The Progress-Index (http://bit.ly/17FR6wM ) that opening up the site for programs would let more people know about its existence.

The Strachan family owned the house from 1640 until 2012, when ownership was transferred to Chesterfield County.

Union soldiers occupied the property and used it at a field hospital from May 1864 until the war ended.
