Suspect in custody after Fredericksburg shooting, barricade

WASHINGTON – A suspect has been arrested after a Halloween night shooting and barricade at a Fredericksburg, Va., apartment complex.

Natatia Bledsoe, spokeswoman for the Fredericksburg Police Department, says police were called to The Commons apartments just before 9 p.m. and found a man, 52, who had been shot multiple times. He was transported to Mary Washington Hospital and is expected to survive.

The suspect, Michael Allen Bailey, 50, locked himself in a unit and police ordered people to stay indoors. Anyone else was told not to come to the area of the complex.

Around midnight, Bledsoe said the Crisis Negotiation Team was working with the suspect as police tried to move people in apartments immediately surrounding the suspect.

The Commons apartment complex, at 2352 Cowan Boulevard, is next door to the police station, where those evacuated were held.

After officers arrived, Bailey fired a weapon several times both inside and outside his apartment. A Fredericksburg police officer returned fire once.

At 2:20 a.m., Bailey surrendered to police and was taken to Mary Washington Hospital for minor injuries.

Charges are pending, and an investigation is ongoing.
