VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- A Virginia Beach police officer has been placed on administrative leave following the fatal shooting of a man armed with a handgun.
Police said Thursday that 30-year-old Shane Whitworth was fatally shot Wednesday evening at his residence.
Officers were responding to a call from Whitworth's wife. She told dispatchers that he was threatening to harm himself and had locked himself in the bathroom.
The woman and her 5-year-old child left the house and officers established communication with Whitworth.
Police say Whitworth then left the house and went into the backyard, where he fired the handgun once. Whitworth hid under a trampoline, and then used a ladder to climb over a fence. After climbing over the fence, he encountered the officers and was shot.
Whitworth was pronounced dead at the scene.
