Worker killed in fall in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Virginia State Police are investigating the death of a worker who fell about 30 feet from a hydraulic lift in Newport News.

Acting Newport News fire chief Scott Liebold says in a news release that the accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Forrest Pine Apartments.

The victim was identified as 39-year-old John Downing Jr. of Hampton.

Downing was an employee of Cut 'Em Down Tree Service. Downing's brother and the company's owner, Joseph Normandeau, tells WVEC-TV (http://bit.ly/HtQQq0) that Downing had about 18 years of experience in the tree-cutting business.
