Virginia Tech president, bicyclist collide

Thursday - 10/24/2013, 3:50am  ET

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- A bicyclist escaped serious injury in a collision with a car driven by Virginia Tech President Charles Steger.

University spokesman Larry Hincker told the Roanoke Times (http://bit.ly/1cYWLyI ) that Steger was attempting to turn into the drill field on campus when the accident occurred Wednesday morning. Hincker did not release the cyclist's name. The newspaper said it received a call from Hannah Stanford, who identified the cyclist as her sister, freshman Abigail Motley.

Stanford said the 19-year-old Motley suffered minor scrapes and was checked out by EMTs on scene. She said Steger stopped at the scene and later sent her sister flowers with a note saying "Hope you are okay!"

Virginia Tech police declined to discuss the incident when contacted Wednesday by The Associated Press.
