RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Attorneys for property owners in Virginia's coalfields region who say they were cheated out of untold millions in royalty payments for natural gas drilled on their land are seeking a summary judgment in their class actions.
The request is contained in briefs filed in U.S. District Court in Abingdon in class action lawsuits involving thousands of landowners. They are seeking to free up nearly $30 million in disputed payments and what they say is much more in royalties they are owed because of underpayments.
The lawsuits name EQT Production Co. and CNX Gas Co., both Pittsburgh-area companies. Neither company immediately responded to requests from The Associated Press for comment, but each has denied the allegations in the past.
Attorneys are also seeking punitive damages at trial.
