NORFOLK, Va. -- A headstone has been placed at the grave of a Norfolk firefighter that was unmarked for more than nine decades.

Edward Anderson Jr. was killed in 1919 when a fire truck returning from a call swerved to avoid a car at an intersection and hit a pole.

Anderson's widow didn't have money to buy a headstone for his grave.

The Virginian-Pilot ( ) reports that retired Norfolk assistant fire chief Marcia Hawkins discovered that Anderson's grave was unmarked while researching the names of local fallen firefighters. She and the Norfolk Fire-Rescue Museum worked together to raise money for a headstone.

Museum curator Jim Bailie says 33 Norfolk firefighters have been killed in the line of duty since 1899. He says Anderson's grave was the only one that wasn't marked.
