RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Quoting from the Bible, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz told a socially conservative advocacy group that President Barack Obama's Democratic administration is "the most hostile to religious liberty" in American history and the health reform law is its most formidable weapon against them.
Cruz and fellow Republican Ken Cuccinelli who is running for Virginia governor headlined a gala for several hundred people who support the Family Foundation, the state's best-known and formidable lobby for socially conservative legislation.
Cruz is the Senate's leader of a House effort to condition temporary funding for federal operations on stripping the Affordable Care Act of funding. The partisan stalemate has shut down many federal operations since Tuesday.
The joint appearance also energized Democrats and abortion- and gay-rights activists, scores of whom rallied outside the event.
