ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -- A Roanoke man has pleaded guilty to beating a former classmate to death, but he still could face the death penalty.
The Roanoke Times reports (http://bit.ly/19iWFwI) that 24-year-old Carey Shane Padgett pleaded guilty in Roanoke County Circuit Court Monday to two capital murder charges, to abduction and robbery. He pleaded no contest to three additional charges.
Padgett was scheduled to go to trial Wednesday for the 2010 death of Cara Marie Holley.
Prosecutors say Padgett beat 18-year-old Holley with a tire iron in a Roanoke County field, stole her vehicle and buried her in Franklin County. They had been classmates in Roanoke.
Prosecutors are still seeking the death penalty when Padgett is sentenced early next year.
