Hampton mayor leaving for White House job

HAMPTON, Va. -- Hampton's mayor is resigning to take a position in the White House.

The city announced Monday that Mayor Molly Joseph Ward will resign Friday. Ward was appointed as a special assistant to the president and deputy director for the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.

In her new role, Ward will lead White House engagement with mayors, county and municipal officials across the country.

Ward is an attorney and has been mayor for five years.

City Council will appoint her interim replacement.
