Newport News gets grant to fight youth violence

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Newport News is getting $870,000 in federal funds to help reduce youth violence and gang activity.

The city said in a news release that the grant will come from the Office of Justice Programs Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/15mPPv4) that the funds will be used to expand an outreach initiative with police and OneChurch

During the three-year grant period, 225 at-risk youths will be provided with services and case management. Others, including adults, will have training in community mobilization.
