NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - The Mariners' Museum will abound with blousy shirts, bandanas and eye patches this weekend as it attempts to claim the Guinness title for the largest gathering of pirates.

The Newport News home of the Civil War ironclad Monitor's turret is aiming Saturday to top the 2012 mark of a mass gathering of pirates --14,231. It was set by the English town of Hastings. The quest for a record is a highlight of a pirate festival in the museum's 550-acre park.

According to Guinness World Records, a pirate outfit includes the aforementioned items, as well as a toy sword, a "wench shirt," a parrot and Capri pants, or rolled up slacks.

Besides the record-breaking attempt, the festival will also include children's games and crafts, merchandise and entertainment. The event is free.
