RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Democrat Terry McAuliffe continued amassing a substantial financial advantage over Republican Ken Cuccinelli this summer in Virginia's governor's race, raising more than $7 million but spending $1 million more than he raised.

Cuccinelli collected $5.6 million in July and August in the only competitive gubernatorial race in America this fall and spent $6.1 million in the hotly contested campaign.

That left McAuliffe with $5 million in the bank to start September and the final sprint toward the Nov. 5 election compared with $2.2 million for Cuccinelli, according to campaign finance reports due Monday and compiled by the Virginia Public Access Project.

Among down-ticket races, Republican Mark Obenshain collected $607,362 for his attorney general race compared to $547,392 for his Democratic rival, Mark Herring, in the past two months.
