Feds seek 180 year-sentence for ex-Va bank exec

Tuesday - 9/10/2013, 2:43pm  ET

NORFOLK, Va. -- Federal prosecutors are seeking a 180-year sentence for a former Bank of Commonwealth executive convicted of conspiring to defraud the bank.

Prosecutors say in sentencing memorandum filed Monday that Stephen Fields' crimes will have a devastating impact on the Hampton Roads community for years to come.

Fields' lawyers responded in a filing Tuesday that the prosecution's sentencing recommendation is unjust. They say Fields is a first offender whose life has been characterized by hard work, humility and good works.

Fields was convicted on six bank fraud and related charges in May. Prosecutors are seeking 30 years in prison for each count.

Sentencing is set for Sept. 16.

The Virginian- Pilot (http://bit.ly/15gUyg6 ) reported the filings on Tuesday.

The bank collapsed in 2011.
