NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture is funding electric system improvements in Virginia and seven other states.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Thursday announced more than $11 million in loan guarantees through the department's rural utilities program.
The Central Virginia Electric Cooperative will invest more than $1.1 million in USDA funds to build 327 miles of "smart grid" distribution lines across 14 counties.
USDA funding also was announced for similar projects in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas.
