NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- The USS Theodore Roosevelt has been redelivered to the Navy after a refueling and overhaul at a Virginia shipyard.
Huntington Ingalls' Newport News Shipbuilding says the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier was redelivered on Thursday.
The redelivery took place following successful sea trials that tested the ship's systems and operations at sea.
A carrier undergoes the 41-month maintenance project once in its 50-year life. The USS Roosevelt was placed into active service in Oct. 1986.
The ship had been in Newport News for the overhaul work since 2009. Officials say the Roosevelt has had up to 4,000 shipbuilders assigned to the ship at peak periods.
Capt. Daniel Grieco took command of the aircraft carrier in February. He relieved Capt. William Hart.
