LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- Virginia State Police are being asked to investigate the death of a man while in custody of Lynchburg police.
An autopsy is planned on the body of 29-year-old Levon DeShawn Martin. Relatives told The News & Advance that Martin died Wednesday after being admitted to a hospital.
A police statement says Martin fled a residence when officers arrived to serve arrest warrants on another man. Martin surrendered, told police he wasn't the person they were seeking, and then collapsed.
The release says police believe Martin had a medical emergency and that State Police have been asked to investigate.
City Manager Kimball Payne says police didn't use force on Martin. Vice Mayor Ceasor Johnson says he has no reason to believe police acted improperly.
A candlelight vigil was held Wednesday night.
