JAMESTOWN, Va. (AP) -- The captain of a James River ferry has been suspended while authorities investigate why a car fell into the river while the ferry began to pull away from a dock.

Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Lauren Hansen tells media outlets that Capt. Jack Goolsby of the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry Service has been placed on leave pending completion of the investigation. Goolsby has been a VDOT employee since September 2012.

The car's driver had to swim to the dock and was pulled to safety Wednesday night. She didn't appear to be injured. The car was removed from the water and ferry service resumed Thursday morning.
