RICHMOND, Va. -- A Richmond woman has been sentenced to five years in prison for the death of her 2-year-old son.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/13y0pvZ ) that Circuit Judge Alfred Swersky sentenced 28-year-old Ashley C. Williams on Monday. A jury had convicted Williams of child neglect and felony murder in the death of D'Sean Williams, who weighed only 14 pounds when he died in 2009 of starvation and dehydration.

Prosecutors have said Williams stood by and watched D'Sean waste away, even as he became so weak he could barely move

Defense attorney Joseph P. Morrissey has said his client tried to feed her child but that he would not eat. Medical experts said the boy had failure to thrive, a condition in which a child does not grow properly or gain enough weight.
