CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) -- The Coast Guard plans to inspect a bridge in Chesapeake after two grain barges hit the span.

The Coast Guard says in a news release that the 260-foot barges broke away from a pier and hit the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge.

An initial inspection found no visible damage. Coast Guard inspectors plan to conduct a follow-up inspection Monday.

Chesapeake police notified the Coast Guard around 12:20 a.m. Monday that the bridge had been hit.

Tugboat crews moved the barges to the Perdue Farms Grain Wharf.

Both the river and the bridge remain open to traffic.

The bridge spans the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River between Chesapeake and Portsmouth.
