Eastern Shore arson case to move forward

Monday - 6/17/2013, 6:40pm  ET

ACCOMAC, Va. (AP) -- A General District Court judge has ruled there's enough evidence to proceed in a case against a couple accused of arson in Accomack County.

Charles R. Smith III and Tonya Bundick are each charged with one count of arson and one count of conspiracy to commit arson in connection with a fire at an abandoned structure in Melfa. Authorities have said the couple is responsible for most of the 77 arsons on the Eastern Shore since last fall. They were arrested April 2.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/15dHKm5) that Judge Gordon S. Vincent found sufficient evidence Monday to certify charges to a Circuit Court grand jury.

In court documents, Smith told investigators he torched 52 unoccupied buildings and Bundick set fire to 15.
