RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Severe storms are being blamed for at least one death in Virginia and left more than 170,000 homes and businesses without power.
Richmond police said an uprooted tree fell on a boy and a man at Maymont Park shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday. Media outlets report the boy, who was under 10 years old, was killed while the man was taken to a hospital.
Transportation officials say downed trees also forced southbound Interstate 95 in Prince George County to be closed temporarily.
Statewide, the storm cut power to more than 104,000 Appalachian Power customers and 69,000 Dominion Virginia Power customers.
