CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) -- New charges have been filed against one of the men facing hazing charges in the drowning deaths of two Virginia State University students.
WWBT-TV reports (http://bit.ly/135Zujw) that Eriq Benson was charged Tuesday during a pre-trial hearing in Chesterfield with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.
Benson and three others already were facing hazing charges in the April deaths of 19-year-old freshmen Marvell Edmondson of Portsmouth and Jauwan Holmes of Newport News.
Chesterfield police have said the men died after being swept away while trying to cross the Appomattox River during an initiation ceremony to join the group "Men of Honor." The group is not affiliated with VSU.
Also charged with hazing are Charles Zollicoffer, James Mackey and Cory Baytop.
All four defendants will go on trial together in July.
