NORFOLK, Va. -- A charter boat captain will spend 30 days in jail for trafficking in illegally harvested striped bass.
William W. Lowery IV also must pay $1,300 in restitution to the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration and a $5,000 fine.
U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride says Lowery will lose his captain's license for life. Lowery also is prohibited from any activity in the charter fishing industry during a one-year supervised release after he completes his sentence.
The 44-year-old Tappahannock resident pleaded guilty in February. He was sentenced Monday in U.S. Court in Norfolk.
According to court documents, Lowery took a charter fishing trip into an area that's off limits to striped bass on Jan. 15, 2010.
