VARINA, Va. (AP) -- Civil War sailors and soldiers will be remembered at a Memorial Day ceremony at Fort Harrison National Cemetery in Varina.
The program and wreath-laying Monday is planned at a cemetery that contains the remains of more than 800 Civil War dead. The ceremony is sponsored by the Richmond National Battlefield Park and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Located approximately 8 miles southeast of Richmond, the cemetery contains the remains of many who fought at the nearby Battle of New Market Heights in May 1864.
The memorial service will include a talk by Jimmy Price, the author of "The Battle of New Market Heights: Freedom Will Be Theirs by the Sword." The talk is part of the national park's continuing commemoration of the Civil War's sesquicentennial.
