RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A state assistant attorney general is being recognized for his role in helping break up a Northern Virginia child sex trafficking ring last year.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's office says Marc Birnbaum was recognized at an annual National Center for Missing and Exploited Children ceremony in Washington on Wednesday.

The group this week recognized law enforcement teams involved in five child abduction or child sexual exploitation cases from across the country.

The ceremony occurs each May in honor of National Missing Children's Day on May 25.

Officials say Birnbaum prosecuted five Fairfax County gang members who had recruited and forced local high school girls into prostitution.

The gang members were convicted and sentenced to between 120 and 480 months in prison.
