RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Three Virginia high school students are being recognized for their accomplishments in academics and the arts.

The students are among more than 140 students nationwide that are part of the 49th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars.

The program created in 1964 has honored more than 6,000 of the nation's top-performing students.

It was expanded in 1979 to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, literary and performing arts.

The Virginia students are: Douglas T. Maggs, of Arlington; Lauren A. Huang, of Fairfax; and Annika B. Jenkins of Virginia Beach.
