FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- The city of Fredericksburg is honoring George Washington's mom on Mother's Day weekend.
Mary Ball Washington became a widow in 1743 and raised the first U.S. president by herself, along with his other siblings.
The Free Lance-Star (http://bit.ly/11b1gnV) reports the celebration is scheduled for Saturday on the grounds of the Mary Washington Monument. The event is free and open to the public.
George Washington Foundation archaeologist Laura Galke will give a lecture on recently found artifacts at Washington's Ferry Farm and how they have shed a new light on his mother's life.
Tours of the Mary Washington House also will be offered.
