RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The co-owner of two Richmond area tobacco stores has pleaded guilty to structuring more than $10 million in bank deposits to conceal involvement in illegal cigarette trafficking.
Jayant Khare (KAH'-ray) of Powhatan County entered his plea Monday in federal court. His wife and business partner, Loveleen Khare, pleaded guilty to the same charge on April 17. They face up to five years in prison when they are sentenced July 19.
Jayant Khare was scheduled to plead guilty the same day as his wife, but his lawyers didn't show up. Judge Henry Hudson ordered attorneys David Morgan and Joe Cravens to show why they shouldn't be held in contempt. Hudson dismissed the order Monday, saying he received a letter from Cravens explaining there had been a misunderstanding about the court date.
