MARION, Va. (AP) -- A 3-mile section of a popular trail in southwest Virginia has been closed because of storm damage.
The U.S. Forest Service says the temporary closure involves the Virginia Creeper Trail between Whitetop Station and Green Cove Station. Visitors can still ride or walk the Virginia Creeper Trail beginning from Green Cove Station to Damascus.
The partial closure is the result of storm damage that caused a culvert to give way. Forest officials say that could cause the trail to fail in that location.
The Virginia Creeper Trail extends 34 miles from the North Carolina state line to Abingdon. Nearly 200,000 visitors use the trail annually.
