BRISTOL, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Intermont College's board is studying the school's options at it prepares its response to being put on probation by its accreditation organization.

President E. Clorisa Phillips tells The Bristol Herald Courier ( that the 129-year-old college might merge with another school. Or it might be acquired by investors.

But Phillips says there are no plans to close the college.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges placed Virginia Intermont on probation last December. The commission said the school failed to have adequate financial resources, a sound financial base and a recent history of financial stability.

College officials plan to submit a report to the commission in May. The case will be reviewed by the commission's board of trustees in late June.
