PETERSBURG, Va. -- Virginia State Police say no one was injured when a Civil War-era shell was discovered buried in the backyard of a Petersburg residence.
Sgt. Thomas Molnar says the ordnance was taken to a secure location in Dinwiddie County.
Molnar tells The Progress-Index (http://bit.ly/170BvW2 ) that the ordnance was dug up Monday during repair work in the backyard.
Petersburg was under a nine-month siege by Union troops in 1864 in 1865.
