WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- A former college athlete's estate has donated nearly $24 million to the College of William and Mary.

Walter J. Zable played football, baseball and basketball at the school. He died in June at the age of 97.

The college says Zable's gift is one of the largest single gifts in the school's 320- year history.

The school will use $10 million for scholarships for student athletes. Another $10 million will be used to renovate Zable Stadium, which was built in 1935. Another $3.9 million was undesignated, and the school is exploring what to do with it.

Zable received a bachelor's degree in physics and served as CEO of a business that develops technology systems for military training and transportation until his death.
