FOREST, Va. (AP) -- Poplar Forest is inviting visitors to explore one of Thomas Jefferson's household "necessaries" -- beer.

The National Historic Landmark in Forest is hosting its inaugural craft beer tasting on Saturday in celebration of Jefferson's 270th birthday.

Officials say the event will feature six Virginia craft breweries, as well as local food vendors, artisans and craftsmen, and music.

Participating breweries include: Apocalypse Ale Works, Blue Mountain Brewery, Devil's Backbone Brewing Company, Parkway Brewing Company, Starr Hill Brewery and Wild Wolf Brewing Company.

Visitors to the retreat also will be able to learn about the science and art craft beer brewing.

Jefferson began learning to brew in the spring of 1812. Beer was considered a table drink in Jefferson's homes.
