NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- A shipping company and two workers are scheduled to stand trial in July on federal pollution charges.

Diana Shipping Services and engineers Ioannis Prokakis and Antonios Boumpoutelos are accused of discharging bilge waste and sludge from the Panamanian cargo vessel Thetis directly into the sea.

According to the indictment, some of the cargo vessel's discharges bypassed required pollution prevention equipment. Diana Shipping owns and operates the Thetis.

The workers and the company pleaded not guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Norfolk. The trial is set for July 23.

A lawyer representing Diana Shipping, Trey Kelleter, tells The Virginian-Pilot ( ) that the defendants are confident that the jury will find them not guilty.
