MINT SPRING, Va. (AP) -- More accurate details are emerging about a runaway vehicle incident on Interstate 81 in Augusta County.
Virginia State Police now say the two occupants of the 1998 Mazda Protege whose brakes were not working jumped from the car Tuesday as it slowed to around 30 miles per hour.
Authorities originally said they had leapt from the car when it was going around 100 miles per hour.
Police also said Wednesday that Sgt. C.J. Aikens used his patrol car to ram the back of the vehicle and guide it into the guardrail rather than stop it from the front as officials originally reported.
Nineteen-year-old passenger Sean Wies and Aikens were treated for minor injuries. Nineteen-year-old driver, Amy Guevara of Harrisonburg, was not injured.
The updated information came from follow-up police interviews.
