RICHMOND, Va. -- The creator of "The Waltons" television series has been honored by the Virginia Senate.

Earl Hamner Jr. received a framed copy of a resolution recognizing his literary and TV achievements Wednesday at the General Assembly's one-day reconvened session.

Hamner's novel "Spencer's Mountain," inspired by his experiences growing up in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains during the Great Depression, was the basis for "The Waltons." Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling said the show became "a piece of Americana."

Hamner also created another popular series, "Falcon Crest" and wrote some episodes of "The Twilight Zone."

The Senate resolution praises Hamner as "a Virginia treasure" and lauds his "immense talent and remarkable achievements."

Several members of Hamner's family joined him in the Senate chamber for the tribute.
