RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- An April 15 hearing is set for a Goochland County animal rescuer who faces cruelty charges.
The Goochland County Sheriff's Office charged 67-year-old Annette M. Thompson with five misdemeanor animal cruelty charges.
Police tell media outlets that officers found about 70 dogs on Thompson's property Monday. Five dogs were in poor condition and were euthanized.
Thompson was convicted of inadequate animal care in 2011. State officials say she's not allowed to operate a releasing agency. Releasing agencies take in, care for and release animals to qualified recipients.
Thompson says the animals she cares for are her pets. She says she's exempt from state requirements that a releasing agency not have any neglect or cruelty convictions.
Last week, a fire severely damaged Thompson's home.
