NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The USS Winston S. Churchill has returned to its home port in Virginia.
The guided-missile destroyer arrived at Naval Station Norfolk on Thursday following a nine-month deployment to Europe and the Middle East that took it more than 56,000 nautical miles.
While deployed, the Churchill helped save a mariner's life off the coast of Oman who was evacuated to a hospital. The Churchill also participated in the first U.S. Central Command joint counter-piracy exercise between the U.S. and China.
The ship also made port visits to Albania, Jordan, Montenegro, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates.
The Churchill has 259 sailors and 39 officers assigned to it.
