NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The attack submarine Albany is due back at Norfolk Naval Station after eight-month deployment to the Navy's European Command.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/YddmEI ) that the Albany is scheduled to arrive Friday.

During the deployment, the Albany traveled more than 40,000 nautical miles in support of maritime security operations. The crew made stops in Portugal, Norway, Scotland and Spain.

Fast-attack submarines like Albany have multi-faceted missions. They use their stealth, agility and firepower to support special force operations, disrupt and destroy an adversary's military and economic operations at sea, provide early strike from close proximity, and ensure undersea superiority.
