RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A Virginia Department of Corrections officer is being praised for stopping to help four young people whose car had overturned in a creek during a snowstorm.

The department says Officer Willie Thompson was heading home after finishing his Feb. 17 shift at the Harrisonburg Men's Detention Center in Rockingham County when he came upon the wreck.

Thompson allowed some of the victims to wait in his car until emergency workers arrived. A fourth victim was trapped in the car and suffering from hypothermia. Rescue workers extracted her from the car.

All four survived.

Department of Corrections Director Harold Clarke commended Thompson for his actions.
