Richmond names new police chief

Tuesday - 2/12/2013, 12:28pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond has a new police chief following the resignation of Bryan Norwood.

Media outlets report that Mayor Dwight Jones announced the change Tuesday at a news conference.

Jones says he has appointed former assistant police chief Ray Tarasovic to the department's top job.

Norwood had served as police chief since 2008. Jones says he and Norwood mutually agreed that Norwood's time as police chief had ended.

Tarasovic had served as assistant chief under Norwood's predecessor, Rodney Moore.

The Richmond Police Department recently has been criticized by prosecutors in Los Angeles for its oversight of R&B singer Chris Brown's community service. Brown was allowed to perform community service in his home state of Virginia for the 2009 beating of pop singer Rihanna.
