NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The USS Gravely is embarking on its maiden deployment.
Media outlets report that the guided-missile cruiser will leave Norfolk Naval Station on Monday.
The Navy says the Gravely will participate in ballistic missile defense escort operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.
The Gravely was commissioned in Wilmington, N.C., on Nov. 20, 2010. It's named after Vice Adm. Samuel L. Gravely, the first African-American in the Navy to command a warship, achieve flag officer rank and command a Navy fleet.
