Group of Va. teenagers charged in making fire bombs

WASHINGTON - Fifteen teenagers from the Herndon and Chantilly areas are charged with making and using fire bombs.

The investigation goes back to Dec. 14 when the bomb squad was called after fire bombs were discovered in a neighborhood playground on Kinross Circle in Herndon, according to the Fairfax County fire department.

The bomb squad had to deactivate one of the bombs at the playground, says Dan Schmidt, Fairfax County fire department spokesperson. That device did not explode and no one was hurt.

Investigators don't believe the group of high school students was trying to target anyone. They were likely doing it as a prank, Schmidt says.

The bombs were made using 2-liter bottles filled with chemicals. The teens are charged with manufacturing, possession and use of fire bombs or explosive devices.
