PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - A presidential panel created after the mass killings in Connecticut last month includes a Virginia law enforcement official.
Petersburg Police Chief John Dixon III is a member of the Gun Violence Task Force established by President Barack Obama. Vice President Joe Biden is working with the panel of law enforcement professionals to develop proposals to curb gun violence.
The initiative was sparked by the Dec. 14 killings in Newtown, Conn. Twenty children and six adults were left dead in the shooting rampage by a lone gunman.
The presidential panel met for the first time last month. Dixon described the meeting as "very focused" on the task ahead. Its next meeting is this month.
