NORFOLK, Va. - The USS Mahan is set to deploy after receiving a ballistic missile defense upgrade.
The U.S. Navy says the guided missile destroyer will deploy from Naval Station Norfolk on Friday. It will join the Navy's Sixth Fleet area of operations, which includes the Mediterranean, northern Africa and Europe.
Media outlets report that the ship received a ballistic missile defense upgrade in 2011 and has been training for the mission since then.
Naval Surface Force Atlantic spokesman, Lt. Cmdr. Bill Urban, says the Mahan was armed with missiles capable of shooting down ballistic missiles and with a system that can track those missiles.
The Mahan was commissioned in 1998 and is the fourth ship named after Alfred Thayer Mahan, a master Naval strategist.
