RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A drought watch has been issued for the Upper James River basin and the New River basin regions.
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality says an existing advisory for the Appomattox River basin has been extended and includes the entire middle James River region. A drought advisory, meantime, remains in place for the Roanoke River basin.
The advisories and watches are the result of low rainfall totals, ground water levels and stream flows.
Local officials are being advised to encourage voluntary steps to protect water supplies.
